Peas (Snow/Sugar Snap)

Snap peas are a cross between the garden and snow pea. They have plump edible pods with a crisp, snappy texture. Snap peas are not shelled but eaten intact with the pod. When it comes to consumption, snap peas can be eaten raw as they are, steamed, pureed or chopped up and added to salads.

Snap peas feature comparatively less calories than that of green-shelling peas. A 100 g serving of pods provides just 42 calories and are high in fiber, and vitamins A and C.

Snow peas are sometimes called Chinese pea pods. This variety has pale green pods that contain petite flattened peas. They are never shelled but eaten intact. The pods are wide and flat measuring approximately 2-3 inches in length. They have a sweet pea flavor and a crisp texture.

Although widely considered a Chinese vegetable, snow peas originated in the Mediterranean, and were grown widely in England and Europe in the nineteenth century.

Snow peas are an excellent source of Vitamin C in addition to dietary fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin K, and thiamin.
